Fun with Literature
In 6th grade, we are currently reading The Cay, a novel set in the Carribbean. This Friday, in order to really dive into this novel, we are going to experience a couple of fun events. First, I would like each 6th grader to bring a blind-fold of some sort. This could be a bandana, a scarf, or a sleep mask. As long as it truly disables sight, it’s good. Second, I will be bringing in langostine (a lobster native to the Carribbean) for the children to taste. If your child is allergic to shell fish, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
Remember to ask your child about this novel, and don’t forget to ask him to explain his experience Friday after school. I’ll post pictures next week.

What’s New?
This trimester is 1/2 way over and progress reports come out this Friday (1-14-11). Please remember that your child’s AR goal is worth 20% of his/her total reading grade. At this time, students should be approximately 1/2 way to their expected goal. Ask your child if he/she has taken an AR test recently. Your child should be reading (not for academic purposes) at least 30 minutes a day.
We are studying novels in all 3 grades. 6th graders are reading Where the Red Fern Grows; 7th graders are reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry; 8th graders are reading Out of the Dust. While reading these novels, students are learning about characterization, plot and setting. Ask your child about the novel that he/she is reading.
Catholic Schools Week is rapidly approaching. Your child is working on the composition of an essay about how St. Anthony’s is an A+ catholic school. We will be brainstorming ideas in class and while some writing, revising, editing and publishing will happen during English class, your child will be expected to complete some of the essay at home. Keep an eye out for other Catholic Schools Week events.
Remember to check Teacher Ease for any grades and email me if you have questions.
With many blessings,
Mrs. Baum
