Dear St. Anthony Families,

This Sunday we will hear one of the most famous of all the parables employed by Jesus in His teaching, the parable of the prodigal son. It opens with: "A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father,’ Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country…”

We rarely, if ever, pay close attention to that part of the parable, namely the son’s decision to leave his father, probably because we want to focus on the father’s forgiving love or the elder son’s icy coldness. But let’s consider the son’s departure and what it tells us.

Life is all about relationships. We are made in the image and likeness of God, the God whose very nature is to be persons totally in love and existing for each other in infinitely deep relationships. We came from that God, and our destiny is to find ourselves in living out that reality. Leaving home, separating ourselves from our parents and families is lethal; it is death dealing, a form of slow suicide.

So the key figure in this Sunday’s Gospel account is not the prodigal son, it is rather his father. May we have a father’s love for all children, a love that comes from the love of our Father in heaven.

Here at St. Anthony’s we had a great first week of school the children were filled with excitement. I would like to thank the entire Junior High Parents who came to back to school night last Thursday. Building community will be the key to our success here at school. We invite our parents in grades K-5 to join us on Thursday, September 9th at 6:00pm in the Condon Center for Back to School night for the Primary and Intermediate grades. There will be important information given at this meeting!

I am happy to announce that we are very close to opening our Pre-School. Our director Ms. Martinez has been working hard to get the room ready. Feel free to stop by and say hello and see the wonders that she has done.

Have a great week!

Blessings,
Deacon Henry
Principal
